Abstract

Mathematics is often perceived as a frightening and boring subject by elementary students. This article presents a portrait from the fifth-grade of MI NW Puyung to unravel the root of this problem. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that students' low interest in learning mathematics is the result of internal factors (physical fatigue during afternoon classes, weak basic numeracy skills, short attention spans, academic anxiety) and external factors (lack of family support, unconducive class atmosphere, limited facilities, one-way lecture methods). However, these factors can be effectively reduced through the teacher's efforts in the form of ice breaking, strengthening numeracy, varying learning methods, using recycled materials as concrete media, and appreciative communication. These efforts revive an active learning atmosphere.
