Implementasi Pemikiran Pendidikan Perempuan Syeikh Zainuddin Abdul Madjid

Abstract

Women's education was a critical issue in the developmental landscape of Islamic society in Lombok during the 20th century. In a social context that predominantly confined women to domestic spheres, Syeikh Zainuddin Abdul Madjid emerged with progressive ideas that granted wider access for women to pursue formal education. His intellectual framework extended beyond theoretical paradigms and materialized through the establishment of the first specialized female Islamic institution, Madrasah Nahdlatul Banat Diniyah Islamiyah (NBDI), on April 21, 1943. This article aims to analyze the "implementation of Syeikh Zainuddin Abdul Madjid's educational thought on women," focusing on the dynamic interplay between religious ideas, socio-cultural conditions, and the educational practices developed through NBDI. This study employs a qualitative approach with historical and library research methods. Data were gathered from books, accredited scientific articles, historical archives, and primary sources related to the educational struggle of Syeikh Zainuddin Abdul Madjid. The findings indicate that his philosophy on women's education was deeply rooted in the theological conviction that seeking knowledge is an absolute obligation for both men and women. This vision was structurally implemented through the founding of female-only madrasahs, providing relatively equal educational access, formulating cadres of female scholars, and expanding women's leadership in socio-religious public spheres. Consequently, NBDI should be understood not merely as a conventional school for girls, but as a form of educational praxis that triggered significant structural and social transformations within the Sasak-Lombok community.
